BRIEF HISTORY OF ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region in Tanzania, located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the mainland. It consists of many small islands and two large ones; Unguja and Pemba Island. Zanzibar City is the capital of Zanzibar.

  1. JOZANI CHWAKA BAY NATIONAL PARK. This is a beautiful place to Visit in Zanzibar. It is a 50 km2 national park in Zanzibar. It is a home for about 1000 red colobus(a species of monkey). It is also a home for Skykes Monkey, Bush Babies, More than 50 species of butterflies, 40 species of birds, tree hyrax. etc.  Leopard can also be found in this National Park. If you are a lover of wildlife and adventure, this a place for you to visit.
  2. Nungwi or Ras Nungwi. This Island is also known as Jumbo Square. It is located at the Northern End of Zanzibar Island. It is a place you need to visit whenever you find yourself in Tanzania. This village is traditionally a fishing settlement. Do you love fishing? Then packed up your bags, this Island is your next holiday destination. The Village has one of the best beaches in Africa. You can begin to imagine an amazing sunset on this beach with your family.
  3. Changuu Island. This is also known as Kibandiko, Prison, or Quarantine Island. It is a small town on Zanzibar Island. It was used in the 1860s as a prison for rebellious slaves. At a point, it was used as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases. In recent times, this Island has been converted into a government-owned tourist resort. There are lots of recreational activities on this island and cottages for tourists. This is also a home for  Aldabra Giant Tortoise.
  4. Sultan’s Palace Zanzibar. It is a 3-story building with merlon-decorated white walls, located in Mizingani Road, on the seafront. The palace was built in the late 19th century to serve as a residence for the Sultan’s family. After the Zanzibar, in 1964 it was formally renamed to People’s Palace and used as a government seat. In 1994, it became a museum about the Zanzibari royal family and history. For all the lovers of history, this is an ideal place for you.
  5.  Spice Tour: This is one of the most anticipated tours on Zanzibar Island. This Island is referred to by some as Spice Island. This tour will take you to the farm where these spices are cultivated. It is one of the leading spices producers in the world.
