How to Apply for a Canadian Study Permit from Nigeria: Step-by-Step Guide

The process of obtaining a Canadian study permit from Nigeria typically involves several important steps. These include securing admission to a recognized Canadian educational institution, completing the required application forms, submitting supporting documents, and applying through a Visa Application Center (VAC). Below is a clear breakdown of the process:

1. Obtain Admission to a Canadian Educational Institution

Begin by applying to a recognized Canadian educational institution. Once you are offered admission, the institution will issue a Letter of Acceptance (LOA), which is a mandatory document for your study permit application.

2. Obtain a Police Clearance Certificate

Applicants are required to obtain a police clearance certificate from the Nigerian Police Force or another relevant authority. This document serves as proof that the applicant does not have a criminal record.

3. Complete the Online Application Form

Fill out the study permit application online via the official Government of Canada website. You will be required to provide personal details, information about your chosen institution, and background information relevant to your application.

4. Pay the Application Fee

Pay the non-refundable study permit application fee of CAD 150 online using a valid debit or credit card.

5. Submit Required Documents

After submitting your application and payment, you will receive a personalized document checklist. The required documents typically include:

  • Proof of Acceptance: Original Letter of Acceptance from the Canadian institution

  • Proof of Identity: A valid international passport or travel document

  • Proof of Financial Support: Evidence that you can fund your tuition, living expenses, and return transportation (e.g., bank statements, scholarship letters, or sponsor letters)

  • Police Certificate: Issued by the Nigerian Police Force or relevant authority

  • Photographs: Recent passport-sized photographs

  • Medical Examination: A medical exam may be required, especially if you plan to study for more than six months or have lived in certain countries. This must be conducted by an IRCC-approved panel physician.

6. Pay the Biometrics Fee

Pay the biometrics fee of CAD 85 per applicant. This can be paid online or at the VAC during submission.

7. Visit the Visa Application Center (VAC)

Attend your appointment at the VAC to submit your documents and provide biometric data (fingerprints and photograph). Additional service fees may apply.

8. Wait for Processing

After submission, your application will be processed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Processing times vary depending on application volume and individual circumstances.

9. Receive a Decision

Once processing is complete, you will receive a decision on your application. If approved, you will be issued a Letter of Introduction, which allows you to travel to Canada. Your study permit will then be issued upon arrival at a Canadian port of entry.
